Pub Review: Evening Star Hotel, Sydney

The Evening Star Hotel is a pub located in inner-city suburb of Surry Hills. One of the areas more laid-back venues, the pub has been serving the people of Surry Hills for over 100 years.

The Evening Star Hotel was once considered to be one of the area’s most popular “newspaper pubs” due to its close proximity to the News Limited building – the parent company of some of Australia’s most popular newspapers. After a hard day’s work, workers would head down to the Evening Star Hotel to discuss the day’s top stories over a cold beverage.

There was also a period of time during its long history, where the Evening Star Hotel was known as a popular venue for live music, especially during the 1980s and 1990s. David Bowie was known to have been a regular at the Evening Star Hotel during his time living in Sydney during the late 1980s.

The Evening Star Hotel has undergone many renovations over its long history with the most recent taking place in 2018. Thankfully the pubs classic exterior has remained fairly untouched although it has since been dwarfed by large apartment blocks on each side.
