Arena Guide: Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo

Ryōgoku Kokugikan is an indoor sports arena located in Tokyo. The arena is known as the home of sumo wrestling in Japan hosting three of the major tournaments held in Japan each year. The arena opened in 1985 featuring a capacity of 20,000.

The current arena is the second to carry the Ryōgoku Kokugikan name with the first opening in 1909 and closing in 1983. Although only two arenas have carried the name, a third arena, Kuramae Kokugikan was used from the end of World War II until the opening of the second Ryōgoku Kokugikan in the mid-1980s.

Although technically a modern venue, the venue features many of the traditional design elements of sumo wrestling. The Shinto roof, the unmistakable sign of sumo arena, is suspended over the middle arena with the portraits of former tournament winners hung from the ceiling. Ringside seats are traditional, featuring a simple cushion with no backing. 

Visiting the arena for a sumo wrestling tournaments, or hanbasho, is a great way to experience the national sport of Japan. Tournaments at the arena are held in January, May and September. Be sure to arrive early to explore the area in and around the arena where you can learn about the importance of sumo within Japanese culture.

The arena is well connected to city’s public transportation system making it easy to get to from anywhere in the city. The stadium is a five-minute walk from Ryogoku Station which is a station on both the JR Sobu Line and Toei Oedo Line.
