Madison Square Garden is a famous multi-purpose arena located in New York City. Due to its long history, and the many notable events held at the arena, it is recognised by many as the most famous arena in the world.

The current venue is the fourth to feature the name Madison Square Garden. The original and second iterations of the venue were located close to Madison Square with the third located on 8th Avenue. To build the current arena, the above ground sections of the classic Beaux-Arts style Pennsylvania train station were demolished, a decision which in the years since has been seen as highly controversial.

The arena is long time home of the New York Knicks in the NBA and New York Rangers in the NHL. MSG is currently the oldest arena in the NBA and second oldest in the NHL featuring a capacity of 20,789 which can be adjusted depending on the event held.

Madison Square Garden is one of the busiest in the world, hosting approximately 320 events each year. Apart from hockey and basketball the arena has also hosted some of boxing and pro wrestling’s biggest events including the first Mohammad Ali – Joe Frazier fight and the first WrestleMania.

Over its long history the arena has also become one of the world’s most famous venues for live music attracting countless musicians from different musical genres. Several musicians have  gone on to play at the venue several times with Billy Joel holding the record with 134 shows.

Madison Square Garden is centrally located in one of the most well connected parts of the city. As the arena was built over New York Penn Station, visitors have several options to choose from when visiting. Those visiting from outside the city can use the Long Island Railroad, NJ Transit or Amtrak. Visitors from within the city should alight at 34th Street-Penn subway station located directly beneath the arena.
