Arena Guide: United Center, Chicago

The United Center is an indoor entertainment venue located in Chicago, Illinois. The arena is home to the NBA basketball team Chicago Bulls and the NHL hockey team Chicago Blackhawks. The arena features a maximum capacity of 23,500, making it the largest arena in the NBA and the second largest arena in the NHL.

The arena opened in 1994 to replace the 65-year-old Chicago Stadium, also home to both the Bulls and Blackhawks. United Center was built across the street from the former arena and features a similar exterior design with interiors that feature all the amenities one would expect from a modern arena.

Sporting history has been made and celebrated at the arena in the 30 years since its opening with both its permanent tenants having achieved significant success over the past three decades. You’ll find several championship banners and retired numbers hanging from the arena’s rafters celebrating the exploits of both the Bulls and Blackhawks with statues of famous players like Michael Jordan and Stan Mikita located in and round the venue.

Recent additions to the stadium include the addition of the Atrium, a mixed-use space which although greatly increased the venues interior public and retail spaces doesn’t really match the design of the original structure.

The United Center is located west from the centre of Chicago. Expect the trip to take approximately ten minutes but be sure to factor in extra time on game days. CTA trains are also available with the closest stop being Illinois Medical District on the Blue Line located two blocks from the arena.
