Pub Review: Strathfield Hotel, Strathfield, Sydney

The Strathfield Hotel is a pub located in Strathfield; a suburb located approximately 12 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district.  The grand three level pub dates back to 1918 spending the majority of existence under the ownership of the Whelan family.

Built by John Whelan after the end of World War I, the pub was built in order to take advantage of the railway line that was being constructed between Sydney and Parramatta. Construction of the hotel was funded by Whelan’s gamble on a supposed lost cargo of Whisky.

The exterior of the heritage listed hotel has managed to maintain much of its classic federation architectural and is still an impressive site as the rest of the suburb has grown around it. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the interior which have been completely modernised and is devoid of any real character with no reference to the pub’s long and interesting history.

The pub features a public bar, lounge bar, bistro, beer garden and still offers modest accommodation. You’ll find the Strathfield Hotel located across the street from Strathfield railway station and despite the bland interiors it’s still the best pub in the area.
