The Angel Hotel is a pub located on Pitt Street in the centre of Sydney’s CBD. The building housing the pub has served many different purposes over its long history.
During the 60s and 70s the building featured a retail space and café as part of the House of Merivale. The pub remains an important part of the Merivale hospitality group who have perfectly maintained the venue’s old school aesthetic: if it aint broke don’t fix it!
The front bar is all class with its decorative tiles, impressive carpentry and gothic style-stained glass. Upstairs features a more relaxed spaced filled with worn-in chesterfields lounges, walls covered with mirrors, ceilings hung with chandeliers and an eclectic mix of antiques. The Angel manages to feel classy and well-worn at the same time feeling like a distinctly Australian version of an English pub.
On the outside, the narrow four-story building’s impressive 19th century Victorian gothic design still manages to impress despite having since been dwarfed by an assortment of skyscrapers. The theatre-like lamps hanging from awning brings the venues class out on to the street catching your attention, beckoning you to come inside.
