Stadium Guide: Parc des Princes, Paris

Parc des Princes is a football stadium located in Paris, France. A stadium has occupied the site of the Parc since 1897 with the current iteration having opened in 1972. The stadium is most often associated as the home ground of French club team Paris Saint-Germain who have called the stadium home since 1974.

The first version of the stadium opened in 1897 on parklands used by the former French royal family hence the name Parc de Princes. The first iteration of the Parc accommodated 3,000 spectators and featured a cycling track around a pitch that was used for football and rugby

The second iteration of the stadium opened in 1932 after a significant redeveloped that included the construction of two covered grandstands which increased the overall seating capacity to 45,000. The expanded Parc would go on to host three games at the 1938 FIFA World Cup, including the opening match, and the first ever European Cup Final (Champions League) in 1956 between Real Madrid and Stade de Reims.

The third and current version of the Parc became France’s largest stadium upon its opening with a capacity of 47,929. The stadium essentially became the national stadium of France hosting matches for the French national football and rugby teams. The Parc would remain the country’s largest stadium until the opening of the much larger Stade de France in 1998.

The stadium’s concrete exterior features a distinctive fin like design that still looks impressive over 50 years since its opening. The elliptical design of the Parc is known to generate and maintain great atmosphere on game days. The only downside of the Parc is the empty space at each end of the pitch which keeps fans seated in the Tribune Auteuil and Tribune Boulogne further away from the field.

The Parc can be reached easily from anywhere in Paris using the Paris metro. Porte de Saint-Cloud station on Line 9 and Porte d’Auteuil station on Line 10 are the closest two stations to the stadium. Both stations are located at different ends of the stadium so be sure to check which is closest to the gate on your ticket as several security checkpoints are set up around the stadium on game days.
