TRIP The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião is a modern cathedral located on the fringes of Rio de Janeiro’s city centre. This classic piece of mid-20th century South American modernist architecture is a must see when visiting Brazil’s most popular city.

TAP The Metropolitan Cathedral is anything but traditional. Its conical design urges those who enter to gaze up and admire the cathedral’s four panels of intricately-designed stained glass. At the top of the structure sits a cross-shaped skylight that illuminates the area bellow with some of Rio de Janeiro’s famous sunshine.

Often overlooked in a city that has no shortage of incredible attractions, the Metropolitan Cathedral is one of Rio de Janeiro’s more unique attractions. Built in a style that resembles one of Latin America’s ancient pyramids, most visitors are unlikely to come across anything similar on their travels.

GO Visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral is free and is just a short six minute walk from Carioca Station on Rio de Janeiro’s Metro network. The cathedral is open to visitors daily from 7:00am – 5:00pm.
